Google My Tracks ending 30th April

The popular Google My Tracks is being pulled by Amazon on the 30th April 2016.

The official line from Amazon is “After April 30, 2016, My Tracks will no longer be available. We apologize for the inconvenience this might cause My Tracks users. We’ve made the tough decision to invest our efforts into other, more wide-reaching, mapping projects.”

When I go out walking I like to record my walks and found Google My Tracks was a great simple app, doing exactly what I needed and doing it well. I was surprised and a little disappointed to hear this news, so I’ve my search for a replacement. This is what I’ve covered so far, hopefully, it will help out others in this predicament. If you’ve found a good replacement please let me know in the comments below.

So what are the alternatives to My Tracks

ViewRanger GPS

Free with in-app purchases.

ViewRanger GPS gets 4.2/5 in the Google App Store at the time of writing and is free to download.

ViewRanger GPS allows you to record your tracks like My Tracks does and export them to GPX. You can synchronise them across devices if you create a free account at the ViewRanger website. This is my preferred replacement for My Tracks. I’ll have to see how I get on and whether I create an account.

You can purchase OS maps from within the app or use the free online OpenStreet maps.

Walk with Map my Walk

Free with in-app purchases.

Walk with Map my Walk gets 4.4/5 in the Google App Store at the time of writing and is free to download.

Another good free app but you need to sign up and create an account. You can also upgrade to an MVP Premium membership option to remove adverts.

This app is simple to use but unlike My Tracks and the other apps here, I haven’t found a way to export tracks yet which is a big feature for me.

GPS Essentials

Free with in-app purchases.

GPS Essentials gets 4.2/5 in the Google App Store at the time of writing and is free to download.

Another good app with the ability to export to KML, KMZ, GPX and LOC. It’s a bit more complicated than the other 2 but does have many more features.

2016-02-27 17.14.57

GPS Essentials supports Google Maps, Mapquest and OpenStreetMap.

Summary

It’s early days, but my choice is currently ViewRanger GPS, but I think I’ll be giving GPS Essentials a few more outings to give it a fair try.

Have you used any of these or another App to track your walk? Let me know in the comments below.

Thanks

Ian
